We are closing in on end of the year, which means it
is time for the annual Christmas Party. This great
event is 4 weeks away and we are all looking forward
to this party. Please see newsletter for complete
details. Also, if you would like to donate an auction
item please contact Kevin Bengel.
I would like to thank Dr. Sing and NCA&T for a great
October meeting and for putting the joint event
together. I was unable to make it to the seminars, but
was able to make it to the dinner and meeting. If you
get a chance please say thanks to Dr. Sing
In regards to NCA&T, we are having them as the tech
section for the November Meeting. The students are
going to go over the start of their Senior Projects.
Please be in attendance and this will start at 5:00pm
sharp to give them enough time to go over their
projects.
I look forward to seeing everyone at the November
meeting!!

Chapter Technology Transfer |
|
|
by Robert Bouknight, Robin Hankins and Kevin Heywood
|
|
Bobby Brewer of the Filtration Technology group will
be our speaker for the November main meeting and
tech topic. Bobby will address new filtration
technologies, and how these technologies can help
with the design of more efficient HVAC systems
(including LEEDS points). Also, these technologies
might help with retrofits in existing buildings.
Bobby will address ASHRAE 52.2 (what the heck is a
MERV?) in the tech section. I am looking forward to
learning more about this important part of our HVAC
systems.
Be sure to let me know if you are coming to the
meetings (rbouknight@jhyatthammond.com). The day
before is fine. This really helps control meeting costs!
Thanks your help with this in the past.
Also, mark your calendar for the Christmas Party on
December 7. We have some fun new stuff lined up
for the party!
Look forward to seeing you at the November Meeting!
Robert Bouknight(CTT & Chapter Programs),
Robin Hankins
(Refrigeration), and Kevin Heywood (Technical,
Energy,
and Government Activities-TEGA) make up
the North
Piedmont Chapter Technology Transfer
(CTT)
Committee. One function of the CTT
Committee is
to "coordinate dissemination of technical
information
in the chapter's geographical area". That
means
we're
planning Programs, seminars, workshops,
and tours.

Comfort from Ice (PART I) - Earliest Records
One of the earliest written records, the Holy Bible -
Proverbs 25:13, mentions "The coolness of snow in
the heat of the harvest." Also, the Roman emperor
Varius Avitus ordered that mountain snow be brought
and formed into mounds in his garden so that the
natural breezes might be cooled.

Membership Promotion |
|
|
by Bill Bullock
|
|
We all hear the call to "Join ASHRAE" and I'll be
working with everyone this year to get more members.
We do need more members to carry on the North
Piedmont tradition; but just as important, we need to
keep the members we now have. Last year we had
more members drop out than new members join.
Don't let your membership, or anyone else's, lapse!
One Program that we are going to do is push meeting
attendance is to offer benefits for both individuals and
companies to pre-purchase meal tickets that we allow
them to receive a free meeting. These meal tickets
are as follows:
- Company - Buy 10 for the price of 8 - $200.00
- Individual - Buy 7 for the price of 6 - $150.00
Part of the September meeting is "Membership
Promotion". Let's all make a big effort to get you and
your guest to the September meeting. Sure, we'll have
applications on the web site and at the meeting; but
bring a guest to the first meeting and let them see the
benefits of ASHRAE!

Congratulations to all the players in the Fall Golf
outing.
Despite the rain postponement, we had a good turn
out. It got
dark a little early but it was otherwise a beautiful day
for
golfing! Because
of your generous participation, over $1700 was
collected for
ASHRAE Research. See flight winners below.
Christmas Party - December
7th (7:00 PM) on the Kress Terrace -- mark your calendars!!
This years holiday celebration promises to be more exciting
than ever. Our theme this year is Old School Vegas.
So dress up in your best vintage attire and come and double
down on the black jack tables, throw bones at the craps table or
try your luck at roulette while dining on the most scrumptious
heavy horderves we have ever offered. Then use your
winnings to supplement bids on exciting prizes to be
auctioned. Of course there will be an open bar. All of
this for a paltry $35/person which includes a starter cup
of chips. There will also be a couples bundle pack which will
include a generous chip pack for only $100/couple. Of course
the proceeds will go to research, but our focus this year is more
on participation and fun. So don't worry about being hounded
for $, just come and have fun and let the heavy hitters foot the
bill!
