We have started the year of on a good note. I would
like to thank Chris Edmondson for being the first
speaker of the year. We had plenty to cram into the
first meeting and Chris give an excellent presentation.
If you get a chance please thank Chris for his time
along with everything that he has done for ASHRAE
and North Piedmont.
With that, we are working on a busy month of activities and events. On October 18th, we have our first Refrigeration Tour scheduled at Natty Greenes. The following week we have our joint meeting with Dr. Sing and NCA&T University. Please see the link provided for the information on this event. There is a workshop from 1:30-6:00pm then followed by a dinner. We need a large turnout from North Piedmont to show our support for ASHRAE and NCA&T. That week is then cap off with our Fall Golf Outing. This is Friday Oct. 26th. If you haven't signed up please do so ASAP. I look forward to see everyone this month and want to thank everyone again for all there time and effort for another great year. Thanks - Bryan |

First, I would like to thank everyone that let me know
that they were coming to the September meeting.
Attendance matched the number that responded
almost exactly. This is a big help when it comes to
managing the costs of the meeting.
ANNOUNCEMENT! ASHRAE society president Kent Peterson, PE will be coming to the ASHRAE North Piedmont monthly meeting on March 25, 2008. Please put this date down on your calendar now. We need to back up our claims to being one of the best chapters in society by having a large turnout for the presidential visit.
Be sure to check the monthly meeting calendar for
meeting dates and topics. In addition to the
presidential visit, we will have two ASHRAE
Distinguished Lecturers among the presenters this
year. I look forward to seeing all of you at this month's
meeting at NCA&T (see announcements) and at the
Golf outing on the 26th of this month. Robert Bouknight(CTT & Chapter Programs), Robin Hankins (Refrigeration), and Kevin Heywood (Technical, Energy, and Government Activities-TEGA) make up the North Piedmont Chapter Technology Transfer (CTT) Committee. One function of the CTT Committee is to "coordinate dissemination of technical information in the chapter's geographical area". That means we're planning Programs, seminars, workshops, and tours. Further your ASHRAE knowledge with the following Insights......... |

We all hear the call to "Join ASHRAE" and I'll be
working with everyone this year to get more members.
We do need more members to carry on the North
Piedmont tradition; but just as important, we need to
keep the members we now have. Last year we had
more members drop out than new members join.
Don't let your membership, or anyone else's, lapse!
One Program that we are going to do is push meeting attendance is to offer benefits for both individuals and companies to pre-purchase meal tickets that we allow them to receive a free meeting. These meal tickets are as follows:
Part of the September meeting is "Membership Promotion". Let's all make a big effort to get you and your guest to the September meeting. Sure, we'll have applications on the web site and at the meeting; but bring a guest to the first meeting and let them see the benefits of ASHRAE! |

Do you know who this good looking fella is? Some
say he is
the father of refrigeration. In the mid 1870's, several
European
breweries showed interest in this work, as they saw
refrigeration
as a technology that could help them improve control
of the
fermentation and storage processes. They agreed to
work with
and help fund him in the development of his ideas.
His first
commercial refrigeration system used Dimethyl ether
as
the refrigerant and was installed in the Spaten
Brewery in 1873. He quickly moved on to develop
more
reliable ammonia-based cycles still in wide use as a
refrigerant in industrial applications.
Like in the days of old, there is still a need for sponsorship of worthwhile science. ASHRAE's is one the prime key organizations which afford such opportunities to many of our best and brightest in environmental control and refrigeration research projects. And all of you have an opportunity to participate. This year, we would like to emphasize involving more members in giving to ASHRAE's research program as a means to meeting our goal. If you haven't given to ASHRAE research in the past, I urge you to take part in this important program this year. It's as easy as making a check out for the amount that fits your budget to ASHRAE Research and handing or mailing it to me. In addition to personal giving opportunities, we sponsor several other events whose proceeds go totally to Research. The first one of this ASHRAE year is the Fall Golf Outing will be held on October 26th (Fri) at The Challenge Golf Club in Graham. Registration forms are available through the North Piedmont web-site and I urge you to register this week so we can get an accurate head count and thus maximize our proceeds. The Christmas Party and fund raising auction will be December 7th at 7:00 at the Kress buiding. We are looking for donations of auction worthy items for this event. Please contact me if you have items to give. For those of you who took the time to read this entire article, there will a free mulligan to the first person at the golf tournament who can tell me the name of the man pictured in this article. |

This month the NCA&T student chapter of ASHRAE is
discussing plans for their spring semester trip to the
ASHRAE national convention in NY. Meeting was
attended by North Piedmonts own Jim Fields as guest
speaker. Jim was asked to speak a few minutes on
how ASHRAE is structured and operates to give the
students a better understanding of the programs and
aid that are available. He also highlighted on what
students can expect to see at the convention, hitting
on the points of new technologies, job fairs, and the
opportunity to meet other student ASHRAE members
from around the globe. Their next meeting will be held
as a joint member meeting with North Piedmont at a
NCA&T hosted workshop on building
decontamination after biological attacks.
We also meeting with Northeast High School on the Building Advisory Council (BAC). This program works with the students to educate them on what job opportunities are out there. This will also help with their Career Fair that is scheduled for Nov. 8th. If you would like to participate please let me know. Thanks - Chris |
