  ASHRAE's Best Chapter
Its that time of year. The beginning to another year of ASHRAE and all that we have to offer. We have put together a great group of chapter offices and chairs for the 2007-2008 year. We will also be offering a great list of meeting topics and speakers that will relate to everyone.

I would also like to take this time to congratulate Bryan Lampley for retaining the RUDY for the 3rd straight year. If you get a chance please congratulate not only Bryan but also all the individuals that help make 2006-2007 another successful year!!!

Chapter Technology Transfer
by Robert Bouknight, Robin Hankins and Kevin Heywood   CTT
Your chapter officers have been working to line up relevant and interesting topics and speakers for the meetings this fall.

Highlights of this year are programs that will be presented by two visiting ASHRAE distinguished lecturers. Tom Werkema will address Global Warming at the February Meeting. Dr. Tom Lawrence will address the new ASHRAE standard 189 and LEED at the May Meeting. We also look forward to presentations by our own ASHRAE distinguished lecturers Chris Edmondson and Chuck Gullege.

We have some open slots for tech topics. I would appreciate any input from members on what they would like to have for tech topics or main meeting topics. Please feel free to email me any suggestions. Look forward to seeing you at the September Meeting! Robert Bouknight

Robert Bouknight(CTT & Chapter Programs), Robin Hankins (Refrigeration), and Kevin Heywood (Technical, Energy, and Government Activities-TEGA) make up the North Piedmont Chapter Technology Transfer (CTT) Committee. One function of the CTT Committee is to "coordinate dissemination of technical information in the chapter's geographical area". That means we're planning Programs, seminars, workshops, and tours.

Membership Promotion
by Bill Bullock   Membership
We all hear the call to "Join ASHRAE" and I'll be working with everyone this year to get more members. We do need more members to carry on the North Piedmont tradition; but just as important, we need to keep the members we now have. Last year we had more members drop out than new members join. Don't let your membership, or anyone else's, lapse!

One Program that we are going to do is push meeting attendance is to offer benefits for both individuals and companies to pre-purchase meal tickets that we allow them to receive a free meeting. These meal tickets are as follows:

  1. Company - Buy 10 for the price of 8 - $200.00
  2. Individual - Buy 7 for the price of 6 - $150.00

Part of the September meeting is "Membership Promotion". Let's all make a big effort to get you and your guest to the September meeting. Sure, we'll have applications on the web site and at the meeting; but bring a guest to the first meeting and let them see the benefits of ASHRAE!

Research Promotion
by Kevin Bengel   Magnetic Refrigeration
Congratulations to everyone who contributed to Research Programs last year! N. Piedmont exceeded their goal and played an important part in bringing home the top chapter in the region award. As a reward for our outstanding performance, the Chapter goal has been raised. This year, we would like to emphasize involving more members in giving to ASHRAE's research program as a means to meeting our goal. Of course our perennial platinum and gold sponsors, golf tournaments and Christmas auction will continue to be a major contributors to the goals, but I hope that we can get more companies and members vested, even if in small amounts, in research efforts that will continue to shape our world. More details to follow in a letter to follow within next two weeks.

The Fall Golf Outing will be held on October 26th (Fri) at The Challenge Golf Club in Graham. This is an excellent course as many of you who have played there in past tournaments will recall. Registration begins at 12:00 with a shot gun start at 1:00. $75.00 per person includes lunch (available at registration), golf, beverages, and prizes!!! An Email will follow with registration information. Call me at (336) 226-4117 if there are any questions or concerns.

The Christmas Party and fund raising auction is already scheduled! It will be December 7th at 7:00 at the Kress buiding. Mark your calendar now --- details to follow as we near the holidays.

Student Activities
by Chris Coble   Student Activities
The North Piedmont chapter is excited to begin a new year with our partner Dr. Singh and the ASHRAE Student Organization at NCA&T State University. We plan to get members of NP to attend student chapter activities in order to make them aware of the resources ASHRAE has to offer. Students will be presenting research projects as a tech session topic sometime latter this year

We also want to remind everyone, that if they know of any engineering students, know is the time to fill out those scholarship applications. Remember that we had 3 students from Region IV receive 10-20K each in scholarships.
