2008 is off and running and we have a fight on our
hands to keep the "RUDY". Triangle is having a
tremendous year and are gunning to take over that
trophy. We don't want to let that happen!!! With that,
we all need to take our work effort and game to the
next level and finish out this year on top again!!!
I would like to thank Robert Bouknight, Bryan Lampley,
Kevin Heywood and Doug Ecklund for putting together
a panel discussion on controls. There was a great
amount of correspondence on this topic and the entire
audience was involved. That meeting could have
gone on all night. Thanks again.
As everyone knows, the next few months are going to
be important to North Piedmont. The BOG needs to
really kick it into high gear and get everything
accomplished that we need. We have some great
meetings and events planned and we need some
large turnouts. Please see the events page and make
sure you have all the dates on the calendar!!
As everyone knows, the society President Kent
Peterson will me at the March meeting. This will be a
joint meeting with AIA so we would like to set a new
attendance record for this meeting and fill the Kress
Terrace. Also, Triangle and Southern Piedmont will
be in attendance as they have requested information
on the Presidents visit. We will have complete details
on his visit in the next newsletter.
See everyone on February 26th.

Thanks to all that participated in the Control Program
at the January Meeting. We had some lively
conversations!
Definitely, all should make plans to come to the
February meeting. Tom Werkema is a nationally
recognized expert on Global Warming. He has
represented the US at several international
conferences on this important topic that will
continue to affect all of us.
Come to the meeting and get the real global warming
scoop. See you on February 26. Also, don't forget to
mark your calendars for ASHRAE Presidential Kent
Peterson's visit on March 25. The AIA gang is coming
to the March meeting.
Be sure to let me know if you are coming to the
meetings (rbouknight@jhyatthammond.com). The
day
before is fine. This really helps control meeting
costs!
Thanks your help with this in the past.
Robert Bouknight(CTT & Chapter Programs),
Robin Hankins
(Refrigeration), and Kevin Heywood (Technical,
Energy,
and Government Activities-TEGA) make up
the North
Piedmont Chapter Technology Transfer
(CTT)
Committee. One function of the CTT
Committee is
to "coordinate dissemination of technical
information
in the chapter's geographical area". That
means
we're
planning Programs, seminars, workshops,
and tours.

Comfort from Ice (PART III) - Madison Square
Theater
The Sanitary Engineer reported in 1880 that
New York's Madison Square Theater was using about
4 tons of ice to cool patrons at evening summer
performances.
The 8 foot diameter fan system used a 40 foot long
cheesecloth bag as the air filter. The draw-through air
of the fan passed over 2 tons of ice in wooden racks.
The discharge of the fan was directed over another 2
tons of ice.

Half way through the year and we are starting to get
some new members to join ASHRAE and North
Piedmont. If you see a new member at the meetings
or events please say hello to them as we want them to
feel like part of our family.
The membership team will be spending the next
month going through and making sure everyone is
current with their membership. If you are one of those
that puts off paying their dues, we will find you and
make sure it jumps to the front of your to do list!

Research Promotion |
|
|
by Kevin Bengel

Shifting domestic and world economics along with
continuing
advances in technology are going to result in energy
options
never considered feasible in the past. Advances in
energy
sources such as solar, wind, fuel cells, high
performace
batteries and hydrocarbon alternatives like ethanol are
the
subject of current research initiatives which have a
high
likelihood of coming to the market soon.
Many of these technologies are near enough to being
economically viable and are getting a lot of funding
from
corporate and government sources. However, there
are other
potentially viable technologies which are further off,
but need
to be funded to progress to the stage where they are
viable.
ASHRAE Research is one such avenue which the
North
Piedmant Chapter has made a concerted effort to
support.
Because North Piedmont has been such a good
donor in the
past, we have a fairly high goal for Research
Promotion
($27,000). Donations received to date from corporate
sponsors,
the fall golf tournament and the holiday fund raiser
total about
$17,000, so we still have a ways to go. This is where
all
of our members come into play. We look forward to
the May
golf tournament as one source of Research revenue,
but it's
corporate and individual member donations that make
the
biggest impact. So please be generous when asked
to help for
this worthy cause.
Corporate sponsors who
have already paid or pledged support this year
are:
- Hoffman and Hoffman Inc (Paid)
- Carrier North Carolina (Pledged)
- All Seasons Mechanical Sales (Paid)
- Alamance Consulting Engineers, PA (Paid)
- James M. Pleasants (Paid)
- Superior Mechanical Systems (Pledged)
- Hahn Mason (Pledged)
- Brady Trane (Pledged)
- Industrial Air (Paid)
A big thank you to all our corporate sponsors!

like to thank Dr. Sing as always for putting this great
trip together for the students.
