ASHRAE's Best Chapter
It is the beginning of 2008, and we need to continue the hard work and effort that we have put into the first half of the year. We are headed in the right direction and have some great events and meetings coming up.

I also want to congratulate Kevin Bengel and his research committee that put on one of the best Christmas Parties! The BOG decided to make this years event a "TRUE PARTY" and we did just that. North Piedmont was able to raise over $8,000 dollars for ASHRAE Research. Kevin along with Robin Hankins did a great job with a limited amount of time. Please thank them when you get a chance. With the tremendous response, we have decided to repeat this theme for next year. Keep your eyes out for this!

The second half of the year will be highlighted with our March meeting. Please put this on your calendar as we will be hosting ASHRAE President Kent Peterson P.E. This will be another great meeting and we all look forward to his visit. Meeting is Tuesday March 25th.

Hope that everyone enjoyed their holidays and look forward to seeing everyone over the next few months.

Chapter Technology Transfer
by Robert Bouknight, Robin Hankins and Kevin Heywood   CTT
Our own North Piedmont Controls companies are going to be in the spotlight at the January meeting, which will be held on the 5th Tuesday this month due to the ASHRAE winter meeting in New York.

A panel of local gurus will host an interactive discussion of current and future controls trends and controls interface technologies. Come prepared to ask any questions you may have for our panel of controls experts. The tech topic will be proper selection and arrangement of dampers for best mixing and control.

Refrigeration Robin Hankins is setting up a really great refrigeration tour: at the RBC Center wwith the Triangle chapter. The details of the joint refrigeration tour with the Triangle ASHRAE Chapter to the RBC Center/ Carolina Hurricanes Hockey Game are still being worked out. Currently, the tentative (unconfirmed) date is set for Thursday, February 28th. Also, the estimated cost for the event will be around $30.00 per person. Additionally, we are planning to make arrangements to offer roundtrip group transportation from Greensboro for this event. A future update confirming date, time, and costs should be available soon!

Be sure to let me know if you are coming to the meetings (rbouknight@jhyatthammond.com). The day before is fine. This really helps control meeting costs! Thanks your help with this in the past.

Look forward to seeing you at the January Meeting on the 29th! Don't forget to mark your calendars for our ASHRAE Presidential tour on March 25, and ASHRAE distinguished lecturer Tom Werkema in February. Roumor has it that the AIA gang is coming to the March meeting.

Robert Bouknight(CTT & Chapter Programs), Robin Hankins (Refrigeration), and Kevin Heywood (Technical, Energy, and Government Activities-TEGA) make up the North Piedmont Chapter Technology Transfer (CTT) Committee. One function of the CTT Committee is to "coordinate dissemination of technical information in the chapter's geographical area". That means we're planning Programs, seminars, workshops, and tours.

Comfort from Ice (PART II) - Hospital Cooling

One of the earliest proposals for comfort cooling in the U.S. using ice was possibly that of George Knight of Cincinnati who in1864, proposed a hospital cooling system in Scientific American. It featured an Air Washer system whose chilled water ran through a coil immersed in melting ice.

Membership Promotion
by Bill Bullock   Membership
We all hear the call to "Join ASHRAE" and I'll be working with everyone this year to get more members. We do need more members to carry on the North Piedmont tradition; but just as important, we need to keep the members we now have. Last year we had more members drop out than new members join. Don't let your membership, or anyone else's, lapse!

One Program that we are going to do is push meeting attendance is to offer benefits for both individuals and companies to pre-purchase meal tickets that we allow them to receive a free meeting. These meal tickets are as follows:

  1. Company - Buy 10 for the price of 8 - $200.00
  2. Individual - Buy 7 for the price of 6 - $150.00

Part of the September meeting is "Membership Promotion". Let's all make a big effort to get you and your guest to the September meeting. Sure, we'll have applications on the web site and at the meeting; but bring a guest to the first meeting and let them see the benefits of ASHRAE!

Research Promotion
by Kevin Bengel   Roulette Wheel
Those of you who attended the Holiday Party on December 7th will recognize this Roulette wheel. It was one of the gaming tables at the "Rat Pack" Vegas Christmas extravaganza. There were about 50 in attendance and everyone who came seemed to have a great time.

In addition to the plentiful food, drink and fun, we collected over $12,000 in contributions which netted over $8500 for ASHRAE Research projects. Thanks to all who attended for your enthusiasm and generousity. Please tell all of your friends about it so we can have an even better celebration next year.

We are still looking for Corporate Sponsors. Sponsors who have already paid or pledged support this year are:

  • Hoffman and Hoffman Inc
  • Carrier North Carolina
  • All Seasons Mechanical Sales
  • Alamance Consulting Engineers, PA

Student Activities
by Chris Coble   Student Activities
This month we participate in the Northeast High School Career Fair. We had four ASHRAE Members present to the students in three different sessions. There were a total of 65 students that choose Engineering and Construction as a possible career path. I would like to thanks Bryan Lampley, Bill Bullock, Jack Krawczyk and Bryan Holcomb for helping out.

The next event with NCA&T is they will be presenting their senior projects at the November meeting. They will be going over their projects and would like for assistance and guidance for there projects. The will start at 5:00pm so please arrive early.
