One more month down and time for the next event. I want to thank Tom Werkema
for his great presentation on Global Warming and Climate Change. We had a
tremendous response from this meeting. I would also like to thank Robin
Hankins for putting together with the help of Triangle a great Refrigeration
Tour at the RBC Center that concluded with a Carolina Hurricanes Hockey
Game. I know that I had a great time.
This month is going to be a very important month in regards to North
Piedmont Chapter. We have Society President Kent Peterson for this
months meeting which is a joint meeting with AIA. We will also hear from
the NCA&T Students on their Seniors Projects. Along with the Senior
Projects, we will be presenting the Reuben Trane Scholarship to Ashanti
Hepburn a NCA&T Student.. See Student section for more details!
I have put a challenge out to North Piedmont to have 100 individuals in
attendance at the March meeting. We have already received conformation
from AIA that they would have at least 20 members. This is going to be a
can't miss meeting and everyone needs to be there.
The final note is for all Engineering firms. JMP has given us a $75
dollar gift certificate for a drawing. This drawing is for individuals
from engineering firms. We will put your name in a hat and pick a winner
at the meeting. Please make sure you sign in.
See everyone on March 25th.

Chapter Technology Transfer |

Those of you that missed the January meeting missed a good one. Tom Werekema,
an ASHRAE distinguished lecturer, presented some interesting and insightful
information on global warming and climate change. It was enlightening to
hear different and more thorough information than what is typically
presented in the mass media.
I have the presentation on CD for those of you that may be interested.
By now, I am sure that all of you are planning to come to the March
meeting, which features ASHRAE president Kent Peterson.. I have received
a lot of responses from North Piedmont and regional members as well as
AIA people. This looks to be a big night for the North Piedmont Chapter.
Be sure to let me know if you are coming to the meetings (rbouknight@jhyatthammond.com).
The day before is fine. This really helps control meeting costs! Thanks
your help with this in the past.
Robert Bouknight(CTT & Chapter Programs), Robin Hankins (Refrigeration),
and Kevin Heywood (Technical, Energy, and Government Activities-TEGA)
make up the North Piedmont Chapter Technology Transfer (CTT) Committee.
One function of the CTT Committee is to "coordinate dissemination of
technical information in the chapter's geographical area". That means
we're planning Programs, seminars, workshops, and tours.

Comfort from Ice (PART IV) - President Garfield
Possibly the most famous ICE TYPE system was the one that used ice to
relieve the sufferings of the U.S. President James Garfield who lay
dying from an assassin's bullet in the summer of 1881. The discharge air
passed through dozens of thin cotton screens onto which dripped the cold
meltage from a salt-ice mixture contained in a tank above. It created a
20 degree F delta T between supply and return

The time is ticking as we get to the end of the year. We have had 6 new
members to date, but have lost 15 members. As Drayton Stott said at the
meeting, we need to keep in contact with the new members to make sure they
stay a part of North Piedmont. Once that stay 3 plus years will continue to
be a part of ASHRAE!!! We need everyone's help.
The membership team will be spending the next month going through and
making sure everyone is current with their membership. If you are one of
those that puts off paying their dues, we will find you and make sure it
jumps to the front of your to do list!
I would like to acknowledge the following new members for the 2007-2008
year.

Polar bears stranded on broken ice shelf. We have all seen the pictures. The
world is obviously getting a little warmer . Is it recurring atmospheric
consistent with historical data or is it something we caused and must
reverse or stall to prevent near-term catastrophe? Regardless of your global
warming beliefs, it is a fact that years of Research in the field have
convinced local, national and world political leaders to take action. This
has spawned renewed interest and investment in sustainable and environmental
friendly energy sources which not too long ago was treated as a fringe
industry. Now Green is mainstream and has become an effective marketing
tool.
Many would consider the environment to be the most pressing issue today,
ASHRAE is one of the pivotal organizations sponsoring research studying
key topics relative to optimizing our continued existence with the
planet. So we as a professional society need to support key research to
maintain our role as technical experts and advisors for policies which
could potentially save the planet.
The Spring golf outing is our final Research fund raiser for the year.
It will be in mid-May. Stay tuned for the specific date and location.
