IMPORTANT: Please note that the next meeting is
Nov. 18!, not the 4th Tuesday as ususal.
Some of us are going turkey the next week.
Hello North Piedmont Chapter members. All of you should thank Jim Swofford for setting up a great golf event! The players were treated to a beautiful, sunny fall afternoon with perfect temperature and humidity, in contrast to the monsoon that happened on the original date. Good thing that the weather is rarely that nice, otherwise none of us would be in this industry. Please plan to participate in the spring event. Call the sitter now to prepare for the North Piedmont Christmas party on Thursday, Dec. 4th. We plan to ramp up the fun and refreshments. More to follow. A special thank you goes out to Brad Thomas from Hamlin sheet metal. It was a treat to have a "duct system" for a hands on demsonstration of how duct leakage testing is actually accomplished, and how much an unsealed duct system can actually leak. Please feel free to contact me or any of the other board members with any suggestions to make the North Piedmont Chapter or ASHRAE more beneficial to you, the members. |

November's chapter meeting will start a little
earlier
than the prior
meetings. The meeting will feature key staff
members from UNC-Chapel Hill's facilities
department. They will talk about new North Carolina
statutes mandating energy and sustainability
standards for government buildings and how they
effect the growth at the UNC
campuses and other state funded
buildings.
The meeting will start with presentations by the NC A&T students on progress on the design of the HVAC systems at the Gateway University campus. We will have our first refrigeration tour on November 21st at the Childress Winery at 2:00. Please plan to attend and RSVP to Alex Bradley at (336) 274-1778 or abradley@fsicarolinas.com. |

This article is the Part 3 in a series titled:
The Early Days (1870 to 1930)
While comfort cooling rarely was applied to individual homes before 1920, it was a steadily growing industry serving commercial and industrial markets. Most Americans' first exposure to air conditioning was in movie houses and theaters during the 1920's and 30's. In Chicago, 5200 tons of air-conditioning capacity existed in the central business district by 1932. This information is from the ASHRAE Journal article "A History of Air Conditioning in the home" by Mike Pauken, PE May 1999. |

Our first refrigeration tour is set for Childress
Vineyards on Friday, Nov. 21st at 2:00 pm. In support
of refrigeration, please feel free to bring a spouse or
guest and also enjoy some Reserve wine at the
tasting after the tour.
The tour will only take about 45 minutes, so there will be plenty of time to discuss the refrigeration processes for wine making afterward. The tour is free and the cost of the wine tasting, including gratuity, is $15.06 per person. Hope to see you there! If you plan to attend, please contact me at (336)- 274-1778. |
