TECHNICAL TOPIC Metal Ductwork Leakage - Green and Sustainable - Brad Thomas

Our first regular meeting last month was a great
success! We had a big crowd on hand to hear Hoy
Bohannon, PE speak on ASHRAE Standard 62,
Ventilation.
I have always been impressed by the amount of HVAC knowledge that the North Piedmont chapter members have. In addition to the talents that our suppliers and contractors (some of whom are nationally known) have, we are fortunate to have several ASHRAE distinguished lecturers among our membership. Hoy and last years Chris Edmundson and Chuck Gullege are ASHRAE Dinstinguished Lecturers from our chapter. Hoy's presentation focused on the shift from population only based ventilation standards that previous versions of 62 had to the population plus CFM/SQFT standards that the latest version of Standard 62 contains. I do believe that the revised 62 requirements will help the design process to deliver more appropriate quantities of outdoor air, which should result in better IAQ at lower first and operating costs for some occupancies. Check out the new 62 requirements for yourself! Also, check out the topics for future meetings on the website. There are some good ones! |

This month we will hear from Mr. Brad Thomas of
Hamlin
Sheet Metal. He will be discussing duct leakage and
it's effects
on energy loss. He will bring a demonstration rig to
measure
and show us the effects of improperly sealed
ductwork.
Next month we will be briefed by the A&T engineering students on their progress in their building design project. Dr. Singh has also arranged for the VP of UNC's Facilities Department and their Director of Sustainability to speak to us about the new legislation for energy and sustainability performance of State buildings in North Carolina. Dr. Tom Lawrence will come up from Georgia Tech in February to brief us on high performance Green buildings. It looks like the tour we were working on of the Wake Forest football stadium (Deacon Towers) will not happen. However, we will once again be honored by a visit from ASHRAE's president in either March or April -- details to come. We are still working on a refrigeration tour. Interest has been expressed for a winery tour and we have also been trying to get a speaker to explain the technology now being used in supermarket refrigeration and climate control. If any of you have a suggestion or are willing to help coordinate a tour, contact Alex Bradley at (336) 274-1778 or abradley@fsicarolinas.com. |

This article is the Part 2 in a series titled:
The Early Days (1870 to 1930)
The earliest high-rise office building that was completely air-conditioned was the Milam Building in San Antonio, Texas, which was built in 1928 St Louis engineer, Alfred Siebert, installed a 3 ton water chiller system in the home of Walter Pierce prior to 1900. Pierce was the president of an oil company and used the air-conditioning system to cool his library and billiard room. This information is from the ASHRAE Journal article "A History of Air Conditioning in the home" by Mike Pauken, PE May 1999. |

We all hear the call to "Join ASHRAE" and I'll be
working with everyone this year to get more members.
We do need more members to carry on the North
Piedmont tradition; but just as important, we need to
keep the members we now have. Last year we had
more members drop out than new members join.
Don't let your membership, or anyone else's, lapse!
One Program that we are going to do is push meeting
attendance is to offer benefits for both individuals and
companies to pre-purchase meal tickets that we allow
them to receive a free meeting. These meal tickets are
as follows:
Company - Buy 10 for the price of 8 - $200.00 Individual - Buy 7 for the price of 6 - $150.00 Part of the October meeting is "Membership Promotion". Let's all make a big effort to get you and your guest to the October meeting. Sure, we'll have applications on the web site and at the meeting; but bring a guest to the first meeting and let them see the benefits of ASHRAE! |

Do you know who this good looking fella is? Some
say he is the father of refrigeration. In the mid 1870's,
several European breweries showed interest in this
work, as they saw refrigeration as a technology that
could help them improve control of the fermentation
and storage processes. They agreed to work with and
help fund him in the development of his ideas. His
first commercial refrigeration system used Dimethyl
ether as the refrigerant and was installed in the
Spaten Brewery in 1873. He quickly moved on to
develop more reliable ammonia-based cycles still in
wide use as a refrigerant in industrial applications.
Like in the days of old, there is still a need for
sponsorship of worthwhile science. ASHRAE's is one
the prime key organizations which afford such
opportunities to many of our best and brightest in
environmental control and refrigeration research
projects. And all of you have an opportunity to
participate.
This year, we would like to emphasize involving more members in giving to ASHRAE's research program as a means to meeting our goal. If you haven't given to ASHRAE research in the past, I urge you to take part in this important program this year. It's as easy as making a check out for the amount that fits your budget to ASHRAE Research and handing or mailing it to me. In addition to personal giving opportunities, we sponsor several other events whose proceeds go totally to Research. The first one of this ASHRAE year is the Fall Golf Outing will be held on October 17th (Fri) at The Challenge Golf Club in Graham. Registration forms are available through the North Piedmont web-site and I urge you to register this week so we can get an accurate head count and thus maximize our proceeds. For those of you who took the time to read this entire article, there will a free mulligan to the first person at the golf tournament who can tell me the name of the man pictured in this article. |
