Welcome back, North Piedmont Chapter members! I
hope you enjoyed your summer break. I'm looking
forward to seeing all of you at the first meeting on
September 23rd.
The North Piedmont Chapter continues to be one of
the best in region and society. We pretty much
cleaned up at the CRC this past August. Many
congratulations to Bryan Holcomb, our outgoing
president, for his leadership
and hard work.
I will get to the details shortly, but first I wanted to talk a
little about the upcoming year. This years' board
would very much appreciate your participation in
chapter planning as well as your attendance. We
would welcome any ideas you might have for meeting
topics, chapter activities, and any other thoughts you
have that would contribute to chapter improvement.
Kevin Bengal is working hard to plan relevant and
entertaining programs for the year. Just email me at
rbouknight@jhyatthammond.com.
Now - back to last year. WE WON THE RUDY AGAIN!*
(shared with Triangle Chapter) for the best chapter in
the region, and arguably the society. North Piedmont
won the Moneybags (Kevin Bengel), Ice Man (Robin
Hankins), Student Chapter (NC A&T, Dr. Singh),
History (Morgan Jones) Emmy; and
Chapter Programs awards (Robert B.) Thanks to all
of you that made it happen.
Lastly, while it would be nice to win the Rudy again for
the fifth time straight next year, this board is focused
on working hard to put plan another great year for you,
the chapter members, the most important part of
ASHRAE.

Glimpse of this year's programs
This year's programs promise to be as informative
and exciting as years' past. We will start the year with
Hoy Bohanon's discussion on developments with
ASHRAE's air quality standard (Standard 62) in
September. Dr. Tom Lawrence will
come up from Georgia Tech in February to brief us on
high performance Green buildings. We will also hear
from the A&T students on their progress on the design
and analysis of the buildings at the new Gateway
campus (November). Other topics for the year
include ground source heat pump systems, duct
leakage and it;s effect on energy consumption,
legislation for energy and environmental performance
of government buildings and possibly a briefing and
tour of the improvements to the Wake
Forest football stadium (Deacon Towers).
As last year's Research Promotion chair, I would like
to thank he corporate sponsors as well as all the
members who contributed through golf tournaments,
the Christmas auction nd other avenues. These
contributions helped to propel North Piedmont to a five
year high in research promotion contributions. Over
one-third of the Research contributions was
from non-corporate sourc es which is a testimony to
the level of commitment of the members to ASHRAE's
research program.
Keep up the good work!
We are still working on a refrigeration tour.
Interesthas been expressed for a winery tour. If any of
you have a suggestion or are willing to help
coordinate a tour, contact Alex Bradley at
(336) 274-1778 or abradley@fsicarolinas.com.

History Notes... |

This article is the first in a series titled:
The Early Days (1870 to 1930)
In 1882 Nikola Tesla amd George
Westinghouse received a patent for their invention of
the electric fan. This was considered a major
innovation in helping people feel more comfortable
during hot weather. However it obviously had
limitations on effective cooling. At most, an electric fan
makes the air "feel" 7 to 8 degrees cooler by
increasing convective heat transfer from the body
(heat evaporation).
Not too long afterwards, paperweights became
necessary to keep work from moving about.
This information is from the ASHRAE Journal article "A
History of Air Conditioning in the Home" by Mike
Pauken, PE dated May 1990.

Congratulations to everyone who contributed to
Research Programs last year! N. Piedmont exceeded
their goal and played an important part in bringing
home the top chapter in the region award. In
particular, we would like to recognize Kevin Bengel.
As the outgoing Research Chair, it was largely due to
his efforts, and as a result Kevin was given the Aurther
Suggs "Money Bags" award. As a reward
for our outstanding performance, the Chapter goal
has been raised. This year, we would like to
emphasize involving more members in giving to
ASHRAE's research program as a means to meeting
our goal. Of course our perennial platinum and gold
sponsors, golf tournaments and Christmas auction
will continue to be a major contributors to the goals,
but I hope that we can get more companies and
members vested, even if in small amounts, in
research efforts that will continue to shape our world.
More details to follow in a letter to follow within next
two weeks, however our goal for this year will be over
$30,000.00.
The Fall Golf Outing will be held on October 17th (Fri)
at the Meadowlands Golf Club in Winston Salem. This
is an excellent course as many of you who have
played there in past tournaments will recall.
Registration begins at 12:00 with a shot gun start at
1:00. $100.00 per person includes lunch (available at
registration), golf, beverages, and prizes!!! An Email
will follow with registration information. Please feel
free to call Jim Swofford @ (336) 2741605 if
there are any questions or concerns. A big thanks to
Jim for coordinating this years event.
The Christmas Party and fund raising auction is
already scheduled! It will be December 4th at 7:00 at
the Kress buiding. Mark your calendar now --- details
to follow as we near the holidays.

Congratulations to Dr. Singh for winning the Best in
Region Student Activities award.
Also, a reminder to everyone, if you know of any
engineering students, now is the time to fill out the
