ASHRAE's Best Chapter
I want to thank the North Piedmont ASHRAE membership for a great attendance and participation at the Christmas party. We all had a GREAT time, and raised $9815 for ASHRAE research in the process.

When you get a chance, please thank the board members personally for their hard work to make the party a big success, and support our sponsors and donors for items that were donated. Next month, I will try to figure out how to put a list of donated items on the website or in the newsletter.

I am looking forward to hearing the presentation by Dwight Landry at the January meeting. Be sure to let me know that you are coming to the meeting. An accurate count helps keep the cost down.

Feel free to contact me any time that you have an idea that would help the North Piedmont chapter serve your needs better. See you Tuesday.

This month we will host a presentation by Dwight Landry on HVAC Noise Mitigation - Chillers & RTU's. Dwight has over 20 years experience in the acoustical and noise control design, consulting and manufacturing field. He is coming to us from BRD Noise and Vibration Control, Inc. in Philadelphia.

In February, Dr. Tom Lawrence will come up from the University of Georgia to make a presentation on a Green Building topic yet to be determined. It will be either "The Coming Carbon Economy and Determining Your Building's CO2 Footprint" or "Green Building and LEED Design, ASHRAE 189.1". Those of you who have a prefernce on the topic should drop me an e-mail and I will steer it in the direction of the preferred topic.

In March we are going to try a lunch meeting. We have not done one of these in a while -- a little variety to mix it up. Our speaker will be Mr. Hank Saye, P.E of Republic Refrigeration. Location and specific refrigeration topic is to be determined, so stay tuned.

Last but not least, we will once again be honored by a visit from this year's president of ASHRAE. William A. Harrison will visit us on April 27th. This is on a Monday, so be sure to make a note of it and mark your calendar.

History Notes...
by Morgan Jones   History
This article is the Part 5 in a series titled: The Post War Days (1945-1960)

Most homes existed in the 1940's were not well designed for air conditioning. Therefore in 1953, Carrier Corporation sponsored a world contest for a home designed for air conditioning. The grand prize went to two Argentinean architects based in Raleigh, North Carolina. Their design was a 1000 square foor house with a flatter roof with very wide overhanging soffits. The houses had huge areas of fixed windows on their north sides. The houses were praised by the owners especially during the hot summer of 1953.

This information is from the ASHRAE Journal article "A History of Air Conditioning in the home" by Mike Pauken, PE dated May 1999.
