Today, I am at a seminar hosted by TRS, one our
chapter Platinum Sponsors. The central theme of this
seminar is the importance of humidity control. Back in
the day when lighting and equipment loads were 3-5
W/Sqft or more and ventilation was 5 CFM/person,
humidity was rarely a problem.
Indoor humidity is a critical component of IAQ. Codes and standards require that humidity not exceed 60% in most spaces. Most institutional HVAC systems directly control RH by maintaining constant discharge temperatures or by directly dehumidifying OA. For most light commercial and residential HVAC designs, humidity is not controlled. It is only an accidental consequence of system operation if indoor RH is within accepted limits. More likely is the situation with low indoor sensible loads resulting in compressor cycling operation, and significant amounts of humid outdoor air being continuously introduced. This is the recipe for high indoor humidity. .The ASHRAE community needs to be more aware of the need to directly control humidity. There are relatively cost effective equipment and designs available now to better manage RH. These products and designs need to become mainstream every day design. We had great attendance at the last chapter
meeting with ASHRAE Distinguished Lecturer
Dr. Tom Lawrence from the University of
Georgia who provided a very informative
update us on Green
Building/LEED Design and ASHRAE 189.1
For this month's meeting we will have a lunch meeting at a location closer to the Winston-Salem area to make it a little more accessible to the folks who work over that way. Mr. Hank Saye, Chief Executive Officer of Republic Refrigeration, will be our guest speaker coming up from the Monroe, NC to discuss ammonia applications in industrial refrigeration. Brady Trane (Greensboro) will host the ASHRAE's Satellite Broadcast -- "Clean, Lean, and Green: IAQ for Sustainable Buildings" on Wednesday, April 22 from 1pm - 4pm. Using the guidance provided by the IAQ Guide: Best Practices for Design, Construction, and Commissioning developed through collaboration with ASHRAE, AIA, BOMA, EPA, SMACNA and USGBC, this broadcast will challenge the building community to use enhanced IAQ practices to create a more sustainable built environment. Join ASHRAE in learning more about your role in transforming mid- range practice into best practice for healthy, productive, sustainable indoor environments. Register at ASH RAE.org starting 3/16 ASHRAE President William A. Harrison will visit us on April 27th. This is on a Monday, so be sure to make a note of it and mark your calendar. His presidential theme is "Maintain to Sustain - Delivering ASHRAE's Sustainability Promise." Focus is on operating buildings to deliver the energy efficiency inherent in their design, including effective commissioning, improved documentation, and programs to educate and certify building operators. |

In the late 1950's, home air conditioning, like any technology, had its detractors. Some people considered the use of air conditioning technology to satisfy private wants, while public needs were ignored, a deformation of American value. In 1958,John Kenneth Galbraith argued that once wants had been created by producers and advertising, it was foolish to believe that the public would ever willingly "un-want" them again, even in the times of national crisis. Shifting domestic and world economics along with
continuing advances in technology are going to result
in energy options never considered feasible in the
past. Advances in energy sources such as solar,
wind, fuel cells, high performace batteries and
hydrocarbon alternatives like ethanol are the subject
Many of these technologies are near enough to being economically viable and are getting a lot of funding from corporate and government sources. However, there are other potentially viable technologies which are further off, but need to be funded to progress to the stage where they are viable. ASHRAE Research is one such avenue which the North Piedmant Chapter has made a concerted effort to support. Because North Piedmont has been such a good donor in the past, we have a fairly high goal for Research Promotion ($27,000). Donations received to date from corporate sponsors, the fall golf tournament and the holiday fund raiser total about $15,000, so we still have a ways to go. This is where all of our members come into play. We look forward to the May golf tournament as one source of Research revenue, but it's corporate and individual member donations that make the biggest impact. So please be generous when asked to help for this worthy cause.
