PRESIDENTIAL NOTES

Our meeting this month will be a little earlier in the month than usual so as to avoid the week of Thanksgiving when many of us will be travelling.  Last month's meeting was awards night and we recognized several members from our chapter for outstanding service to the Chapter and Region.  Peter Rimassa provided us with a synopsis on the current capabilities of boilers and how they fit into the today's movement towards energy conservation and efficiency.  Both the tech session presentations can be downloaded from the Chapter website or by clicking here and here.   We also heard a summary presentation on Duke Energy's "Smart $aver" rebate program which can also be downloaded from the Chapter website.

Special thanks to Jim Swofford and the others who helped to make this year's Fall Golf Outing a great event at the Greensboro National course on Nov. 6th.  Not only did we have a great showing (17 teams), but the weather was absolutely perfect as Jim had promised.  Approximately $3000 was raised for ASHRAE Research thanks to the generous members of our chapter.  Great job Jim and thanks from all of us.

This month we have the good fortune to host Dennis Knight, a long-time Region IV ASHRAE member from the Charleston chapter and an ASHRAE Distinguished Lecturer.  His presentation will be on the current state and trends in Building Information Modeling's (BIM) as it pertains to design and construction.  Read more in Robin's article below.

MARK YOUR CALENDAR FOR DECEMBER 3RD'S ANNUAL HOLIDAY PARTY AND AUCTION TO BENEFIT ASHRAE RESEARCH PROGRAMS.  IT WILL BE HELD AT THE KRESS TERRACE STARTING AT 7:00.  WE WILL ONCE AGAIN CELEBRATE THE SEASON WITH GOOD FOOD AND DRINK AND A CASINO EXTRAVAGANZA COMPLETE WITH PRIZES AND THE ALWAYS ENTERTAINING AUCTION.  SO BRING YOUR APPETITE AND WALLET AND CELEBRATE THE SEASON FOR A GREAT CAUSE.  MORE DETAILS TO COME SOON.

Research Promotion
The annual Holiday Party will be held at the Kress Terrace on Thursday, December 3rd at 7:00.  It will feature fun casino games and the always fun auction.  We need to collect auction items now for this important ASHRAE Research Promotion event.  Please contact me or Robin Hankins with items that you can provide for the auction.  If you do not have time to shop for or otherwise obtain auction items, we will be glad to go get them if you will finance their purchase.  Your help is imperative to make this a successful event for one of ASHRAE's most important technical programs.

The North Piedmont Chapter is hosting the Chapter Regional Conference (CRC) for Region IV in August of next year.
The CRC Committee is still working out the details on the specific date and venue, but it has been decided that the sponsorship campaign will be a coordinated effort to raise funds for both the CRC and Research Promotion.  This is the reason that you who are perennial Research Promotion sponsors have not yet received a letter regarding Research Promotion sponsorship.  The CRC Committee is meeting next week and will hopefully make sufficient progress that we can send letters with more information regarding sponsorship opportunities.  Thanks for your patience.

Chapter Technology Transfer and Programs

Our October meeting topic is on Building Information Modeling known in the industry as BIM.  Building Information Modeling is the process of generating and managing building data during its life cycle. Typically it uses three-dimensional, real-time, dynamic building modeling software to increase productivity in building design and construction.  The process produces the Building Information Model (also abbreviated BIM), which encompasses building geometry, spatial relationships, geographic information, and quantities and properties of building components (thank you Wikopedia!).

The presentation explores building information modeling application issues as they relate to developing high-performance and integrated design solutions. The collaborative segment explores the connectivity and benefits of BIM through the use of consistent data sets andBIM Model parametric responses to single discipline changes. The specific role of the HVAC engineer is examined to identify new skill sets that will be required to contribute to a BIM-enabled design process.

Our presenter will be Dennis Knight, P.E. of Liollio Architecture in Charleston, SC.  Quoting Dennis from and article on the ASHRAE web-site ---- "Although buildings will continue to be unique undertakings that will never enjoy the refinements and economies that mass production industries do, BIM allows the construction industry to accurately design, construct and operate buildings in a virtual environment before the first yard of earth is moved or the first brick or bath of mortar ordered.  By allowing for greater collaboration between disciplines and trades involved in the process, we will produce better buildings that are safer, healthier, environmentally more sustainable and economically more efficient with fewer errors, omissions and less waste."

Mr. Knight is vice chair of ASHRAE's technical committee on integrated building design which is actively participating in the process of making BIM a preferred method of designing, constructing and operating buildings.  ASHRAE has established a Building Information Modeling and Interoperability Steering Committee to develop and identify initiatives and opportunities presented by interoperability, BIM, and related topics.  The committee also is working to develop informational and educational programs on BIM and interoperability.

Externally ASHRAE is participating in collaborative efforts to help develop common terminology and common technologies to ensure data exchange across operating platforms and software systems is reliable and accurate.

ASHRAE has representation on the "buildingSMART" Alliance, which is an independent body of the National Institute of Building Sciences.  The alliance, whose members include the International Code Council, the International Alliance on Interoperability and the Construction Specification Institute, is working to develop an open information environment for knowledge based collaborative processes throughout the lifecycle of a building.

Dennis is a long standing member of ASHRAE and certified as an ASHRAE Distinguished Lecturer.  He has been active as a leader at all levels of ASHRAE and we are fortunate to have him come and talk to us about this complex topic.
Membership
I'd like to thank everyone for coming out for our Membership Promotion night last month, it was a huge success!

First I'd like to welcome all of our new members (or previous members) that signed up in the month of September:

Chad Edmondson
Sam Kirkman
Daniel Cox
Josh Murchison
Sam Allred
John Wilson
Scott Nelles
Bryan Humphrey
Kevin Barnwell

It's great to have all of you as a part of the North Piedmont chapter of ASHRAE.

I would like to make a quick note on delinquency status.  This year has been one of the hardest in ASHRAE's history, and much of that is obviously due to the economy.  Whether a company no longer sponsors employees or someone no longer feels they can afford membership, it has hit us all.  Nationally, ASHRAE's delinquency rate jumped 350% from last year's numbers.

I mentioned that to only say how proud I am of our chapter at this point.  On our master list, we are showing 286 active members (including students) in North Piedmont.  We only have a 7.7% rate at this point, which is fantastic.  If you take into account that 12 of those are Life members and no longer pay dues, we are at a 3.5% rate.  I challenge any of the other chapters to have such a dedicated group as we do.

Renewing is simple, but renewing online is simple and GREEN! Click Renew Online for a step-by-step guide with screenshots on getting that membership back up and running.  We will have internet access at the meetings, and if you'd like to renew that night, it can be done.  If you are a life member, then all you need to do is Email Me, let me know you are interested in remaining in ASHRAE, and also let me know if you would like to receive your handbooks this year, and that's it.

If you have a question about the status of your membership, and when your next renewal date is, just ask and I'd be glad to help you out.

Are you a student that just graduated?  Instead of jumping straight into an official membership, we have a Student Transfer plan that allows you to save for the first three years after graduation.

If you know of anyone in your office that is interested in ASHRAE and not currently a member, let me know and I'd be glad to get in touch with them and answer any questions they may have.  I'd also be happy to add them to our mailing list so they can receive these updates as you do each month.

One final note.  Please Email Me if you have any questions about a membership related question, or if you have any suggestions on activities you feel would help promote membership.  I look forward to seeing you all at our next meeting!

Student Activities
John Cole
As we move in the current month of November, we are looking forward to representing ASHRAE at NC A&T's participation in National Energy Day on Friday November 20th. Again, this will include a K-12 outreach with the school districts that will be attending from around the state, as well as contact with existing university students who have not participated in ASHRAE.

Also we have been very engaged in assisting the ASHRAE Student Chapter members by reviewing their resumes to enhance their opportunities in the job market. Given the current state of the economy, with so much competition for the few jobs that are available, our students need that competitive edge. Therefore, with our professional experience and associations with various career fairs, from the employer perspective, we have provided resume critiques for all students that need the assistance.

Moreover, we are still stressing the importance of attending the ASHRAE Winter Conference, new student membership, student member scholarships and participation in the North Piedmont Chapter meetings. I do not recall any students attending the golf tournament but I suspect with mid-terms coming and the Thanksgiving holiday approaching, most of the students were concentrating the books.

That's my update for this month and until then I look forward to speaking with you next month!
Young Engineers in ASHRAE (YEA)

YEA is an ASHRAE program for young members to create activities and social networking opportunities for our peer group and have some fun at the same time. YEA gives us the opportunity to interact in a forum other than the more formal chapter meetings.  YEA will be one of the avenues to help students preparing for entry into our field. With involvement in promoting student development and membership through a mentoring role and participation with the ASHRAE student chapter this can succeed. Grady Sanders, John Cole and I met with Dr. Singh to discuss the North Piedmont Chapters involvement in student development. We need assistance in establishing Co-Sponsors for an 'ENERGY DAY' at A& T on November 20. If you or your organization is interested please let me know. We would also like to have a YEA member meet with the student Chapter on a regular basis at their monthly meeting to develop open lines of communication. I plan to speak to the Board of Governors for input on raising money for financial assistance for the students and YEA members to attend the annual meeting in Orlando Jan 23-25th 2010. If you plan to attend and need help with the logistics don't hesitate to contact me. Anyone interested in being a lecturer for the Senior Design Project (AREN 662) or student meetings please contact me or Dr. Singh. We will be providing facilities and industrial site visits if you are interested in attending and providing input on your area of expertise for the student. We need YEA and student members to be more involved in the monthly chapter meetings to ensure we get the professional development we need to be productive members of this society. As YEA members you are a valued source of information to the upcoming future of our organization. Any input you would you contribute would be greatly appreciated. The first YEA meeting will be in November. The event and location are to be determined so keep an eye out for the notice.

I look forward to your participation in making this a successful endeavor. This is a new initiative and will only be successful if eligible members like you help make it happen.  Take a look at http://www.facebook.com/home.php?#/pages/Atlanta-GA/Young-Engineers-in-ASHRAE/133925524350?ref=nf.  (Note you have to be logged into facebook to access this link).

 "Natural Ice Cooling"
The first American to try to cool a room was John Gorrie. He was a doctor in charge of the U.S. Marine Hospital in Apalachicola, Florida, where yellow fever was common. Following a severe outbreak in 1842, he sought new ways to treat it. Using ice, he eventually succeeded in chilling a hospital ward. The ice had been imported from New England, whose merchants were then enjoying a brisk trade in natural ice, cutting blocks from frozen lakes and shipping them with sawdust for insulation
The supplies of natural ice were unreliable, so Gorrie turned his attention to inventing a machine that would make it. Not surprisingly, Apalachicola lacked a technical library, but in New York City he found the publications he needed.
