PRESIDENTIAL NOTES
by Kevin  Bengel

Greeting to all -- it was great to see both new and familiar faces at last month meeting!  We had 45 in attendance for the afternoon tech session and 57 came to the evening program!  From all accounts, the meetings were well received and enjoyed by all.  For those that were unable to attend and would like to see the "Dedicated Outside Air System" material presented by Paul Piper in the afternoon session, click here.  For the evening presentation on "Meeting and Exceeding High Performance Codes and Guidelines With Air-to-Air Energy Recovery Systems and Equipment", click here.Kevin Bengel at Tropicana Field (CRC2009)
This month should prove to be as interesting as the last. Note that the fist Tech Session starts at 3:00 this month.  Our speaker will discuss issues and applications related to Condensing Boilers.

It is also awards recognition night!  We will present awards to chapter members whom have recently been honored at the chapter, regional and national levels.  Most of these were presented at the Chapter Regional Conference (CRC) in August in Tampa.  In addition to recognition for hard working ASHRAE leaders of past, there were workshops for committee chairs of the future.  But it was not all business -- we had fun too as you can see in the picture above of me and my lovely bride at the Rays/Red Sox game.  The game was great even if the score did not come out right (the Rays won -- Booooooo!).

Those to be recognized are:
  • Robert Bouknight - Past North Piedmont President
  • Morgan Jones - Benny Bootle History Display Award
  • Alex Bradley - Iceman Award (Refrigeration)
  • Drayton Stott - Chapter Service Award
  • Andy Cochrane - Chapter Service Award
  • North Piedmont Chapter - Full Circle ($100 to Research from Each Officer), Top 5 Award ($100/member), High Honor Roll, Special Citation/Star

Congratulations to the Atlanta Chapter for bringing home the Rudy Ferguson Award for the overall best chapter in Region IV for 2008/2009.

  • Jim Swofford - Golf Tournament Coordinator
  • Bryan Holcomb - At Large Member
  • Tom Phoenix - At Large Member
  • Andy Cochrane - At Large Member
  • Drayton Stott - At Large Member

These folks are doing and awesome job this year in providing information, education and comradery for the chapter.  so make sure you introduce yourself and tell us what you do and don't like about ASHRAE and the Chapter.  See what some of them have to say below.

Membership
I'd like to thank everyone for coming out for our Membership Promotion night last month, it was a huge success!

First I'd like to welcome all of our new members (or previous members) that signed up in the month of September:

Chad Edmondson
Sam Kirkman
Daniel Cox
Josh Murchison
Sam Allred
John Wilson
Scott Nelles
Bryan Humphrey
Kevin Barnwell

It's great to have all of you as a part of the North Piedmont chapter of ASHRAE.

I would like to make a quick note on delinquency status.  This year has been one of the hardest in ASHRAE's history, and much of that is obviously due to the economy.  Whether a company no longer sponsors employees or someone no longer feels they can afford membership, it has hit us all.  Nationally, ASHRAE's delinquency rate jumped 350% from last year's numbers.

I mentioned that to only say how proud I am of our chapter at this point.  On our master list, we are showing 286 active members (including students) in North Piedmont.  We only have a 7.7% rate at this point, which is fantastic.  If you take into account that 12 of those are Life members and no longer pay dues, we are at a 3.5% rate.  I challenge any of the other chapters to have such a dedicated group as we do.

Renewing is simple, but renewing online is simple and GREEN! Click Renew Online for a step-by-step guide with screenshots on getting that membership back up and running.  We will have internet access at the meetings, and if you'd like to renew that night, it can be done.  If you are a life member, then all you need to do is Email Me, let me know you are interested in remaining in ASHRAE, and also let me know if you would like to receive your handbooks this year, and that's it.

If you have a question about the status of your membership, and when your next renewal date is, just ask and I'd be glad to help you out.

Are you a student that just graduated?  Instead of jumping straight into an official membership, we have a Student Transfer plan that allows you to save for the first three years after graduation.

If you know of anyone in your office that is interested in ASHRAE and not currently a member, let me know and I'd be glad to get in touch with them and answer any questions they may have.  I'd also be happy to add them to our mailing list so they can receive these updates as you do each month.

One final note.  Please Email Me if you have any questions about a membership related question, or if you have any suggestions on activities you feel would help promote membership.  I look forward to seeing you all at our next meeting!

Chapter Technology Transfer and Programs

Our October meeting topic is "How to Reduce Your Heating Bills by up to 35% By Understanding Boiler Efficiency and Best Design Practices" presented by Mr. Harold Krebs.  This topic will cover identifying and measuring heating system losses and the current test standards for boilers.  Additionally, we will review heating system considerations to reduce losses and maximize savings, and current boiler technology and application consideration.

The Technical Session will start at 3:00 and will be a 2-hr seminar titled: "High Performance Heating System Design" presented by Mr. Krebs.  The seminar will include defining components of "high performance" designs including the benefits and consideration of higher delta T coil selections, more aggressive reset schedules, variable flow designs, and condensing/modulating boilers.

Mr. Harold Krebs is national sales manager for AERCO International, Inc. He is an ASHRAE  and ASPE member.  Mr Krebs has a masters degree in business administration from the University of Colorado, and a bachelors degree in Marine Engineering from the US Merchant Marine Academy.  Harold has over 15 years of experience in the design, application, and controls of high-efficiency water heaters and boilers.

During the meeting there will be a short Tech Topic II presentation by Mr. Rob Howard of WECC.  This presentation will follow dinner and will focus on Duke Energy's "Smart Saver Incentive Program."   WECC has been hired by Duke Energy to administer this program which includes rebates for energy efficiency  measures in lighting, HVAC, chillers, thermal storage, motors, pumps, variable frequency drives, process equipment, and food service equipment.  Every contractor and engineer in our field should be aware of this program and the savings it can provide to their customers for energy saving upgrades and improvements.

Mr. Rob Howard is a representative of Wisconsin Energy Conservation Corporation which is the Trade Ally Service Representative for the Duke Energy Smart Saver Incentive Program.  Rob is a certified Home Energy Rater and formed a green building and energy efficiency consulting firm called Home Energy Solutions.  He is a NCSU Graduate and is the current president of the Home Builders Association in Hickory.

Student Activities
John Cole
Greetings to all! We have "hit the ground running" with our partnership between the Student Activities Chair, the YEA Chair and the Membership Chair in regards to our collaboration with NC A&T ASHRAE Student Chapter. Grady Saunders, Student Membership, Lee Huffines, YEA, and myself teamed together for an initial meeting with Dr. Singh of NC A&T to map out our strategy and commitment for working together this year. First, there will be an ASHRAE presence at every NC A&T Student Chapter meeting starting with the first meeting Monday October 12th at 4:00pm. Second, we will track existing and new student membership to give constructive feedback and encourage more student participation in ASHRAE through the student chapter. Third, we will dedicate an ASHRAE booth for NC A&T's participation in National Energy Day Friay November 20th. This will include a K-12 outreach with the school districts that will be attending from around the state, as well as contact with existing university students who have not participated in ASHRAE. And lastly, formalizing a meeting between the student chapter and the President of ASHRAE when he visits the North Piedmont Chapter in March of next year.

We have already started to execute our partnering strategy last month with a presentation to one of Dr. Singh's classes Monday September 28th. The presentation included Geothermal Systems overview, Participation in ASHRAE and Presentation and Interviewing Skills for the Corporate World. Maurice Harrison of Johnson Controls attended and provided invaluable insight to the students as well. Also, I attend the first NC A&T ASHRAE Student Chapter meeting this past Monday October 12th at 4:00 pm. Chapter President Melonee Jenkins and Vice President Janessa Smith conducted a very well run chapter meeting. They stressed the importance of attending the ASHRAE Winter Conference, new student membership, student member scholarships and participation in the North Piedmont Chapter meetings, as well as the upcoming golf tournament.

In conclusion, we are already seeing excitement and eagerness from the students through our collaborative partnering strategy. The students want to learn more about ASHRAE, what they can achieve and how can they assist our chapter. And as we move forward, I continue to update you on the outcomes of this new and forward thinking relationship. Thanks and have a great day!
Young Engineers in ASHRAE (YEA)

YEA is an ASHRAE program for young members to create activities and social networking opportunities for our peer group and have some fun at the same time. YEA gives us the opportunity to interact in a forum other than the more formal chapter meetings.  YEA will be one of the avenues to help students preparing for entry into our field. With involvement in promoting student development and membership through a mentoring role and participation with the ASHRAE student chapter this can succeed. Grady Sanders, John Cole and I met with Dr. Singh to discuss the North Piedmont Chapters involvement in student development. We need assistance in establishing Co-Sponsors for an 'ENERGY DAY' at A& T on November 20. If you or your organization is interested please let me know. We would also like to have a YEA member meet with the student Chapter on a regular basis at their monthly meeting to develop open lines of communication. I plan to speak to the Board of Governors for input on raising money for financial assistance for the students and YEA members to attend the annual meeting in Orlando Jan 23-25th 2010. If you plan to attend and need help with the logistics don't hesitate to contact me. Anyone interested in being a lecturer for the Senior Design Project (AREN 662) or student meetings please contact me or Dr. Singh. We will be providing facilities and industrial site visits if you are interested in attending and providing input on your area of expertise for the student. We need YEA and student members to be more involved in the monthly chapter meetings to ensure we get the professional development we need to be productive members of this society. As YEA members you are a valued source of information to the upcoming future of our organization. Any input you would you contribute would be greatly appreciated. The first YEA meeting will be in November. The event and location are to be determined so keep an eye out for the notice.

I look forward to your participation in making this a successful endeavor. This is a new initiative and will only be successful if eligible members like you help make it happen.  Take a look at http://www.facebook.com/home.php?#/pages/Atlanta-GA/Young-Engineers-in-ASHRAE/133925524350?ref=nf.  (Note you have to be logged into facebook to access this link).

History Notes ... Morgan Jones
 "Natural Ice Cooling"
The first American to try to cool a room was John Gorrie. He was a doctor in charge of the U.S. Marine Hospital in Apalachicola, Florida, where yellow fever was common. Following a severe outbreak in 1842, he sought new ways to treat it. Using ice, he eventually succeeded in chilling a hospital ward. The ice had been imported from New England, whose merchants were then enjoying a brisk trade in natural ice, cutting blocks from frozen lakes and shipping them with sawdust for insulation
The supplies of natural ice were unreliable, so Gorrie turned his attention to inventing a machine that would make it. Not surprisingly, Apalachicola lacked a technical library, but in New York City he found the publications he needed.

Refrigeration

We have established a venue and date for our FALL REFRIGERATION TOUR.

Harris Teeter Supermarkets Distribution Center
Greensboro, NC
Friday December 11, 2009
3:00 - 4:00

 Jamie King 1
The folks at Harris Teeter have granted us access for a tour of their Greensboro Distribution center. The 550,000 square-foot non-perishable distribution and transportation facility is located near the airport along with a 139,000 square-foot ammonia refrigeration operation. I expect this to be a great tour with some impressive systems to be highlighted.  We are also looking at a short social after the tour.  Stay tuned for for more details.

I will send out an event invitation to all members with more details about the tour and a potential social afterwards in the coming weeks.
