PRESIDENTIAL NOTES
by Kevin  Bengel

Tradewinds ResortSeveral of us had the pleasure to enjoy a taste of the tropics at the sunny (and humid!) Tradewinds Resort in St. Pete's Beach for the Chapter Regional Conference (CRC).  It was a joint2008 Fall Golf Outing conference with Region XII (FL, Puerto Rico, and south America).  Though the setting and company were enjoyable, North Piedmont was not fortunate enough to repeat as the "Rudy" winner for the best chapter in Region IV.  However, we did win the Presidential Award of Excellence Star Award and Special Citation and well as the Region's Refrigeration Program Award.  Morgan Jones was also presented with the Benny Bootle History Award for the best Chapter Display -- which we will get to see ourselves at this year's meetings!  More to come on the CRC awards in a separate e-mail.  Special thanks to Robert Bouknight for leading us to those accomplishments.  This year an eager and capable leadership team has been assembled which will likely lead us back to the top of the heap where we belong.

Robin Hankins has assembled a program line-up that promises to be full of interesting topics and chalked full of information you can apply in your daily project challenges.  Grady Saunders has jumped into the lead as Membership Committee chair and is working diligently to identify new blood and bring back old friends that may have taken a break for a while.  John Cole will be working with Dr. Singh and the NC A&T Student Chapter as well as facilitating other teachers in the area to promote interest in the HVAC and engineering fields.  We are also are fortunate enough to have Lee Huffines, a recent NC State grad and transfer from the Triangle Chapter to take the lead with the Young Engineers in ASHRAE (YEA).  He will be working with both John and Grady to help mentor and encourage young engineers and others new to our business.  The Research Promotion Committee Chair this year is Mark Reavis.  This is a challenging but very important role as it is the key funding source for academic and well as industry research critical to the advancement of industry.  He will be assisted by Co-Chair Tony SantoroJim Swofford will organize the golf tournaments -- another key element of our Research fundraiser activities.  Jamie King has been kind enough to serve as both Secretary and Refrigeration Committee Chair this year.  Morgan Jones will once again preserve the legacy of our Chapter as the History Committee chair.  Jeff Vestal will take over the books as Chapter Treasurer.  And rounding out the Board of Governors are familiar faces of Drayton Stott, Tom Phoenix, Bryan Holcomb, Andy Cochrane, Robert Bouknight and Billy Williams who have been past officers to lend their experience and help guide us to another great year of learning and fellowship.
Membership (THIS MONTH'S SPOTLIGHT)
It's great to have been selected to work for the North Piedmont chapter in promoting membership.  We all have a ton of work ahead of us, as ASHRAE as a whole has the highest delinquency rate in the history of the society.

If you haven't heard from me, congrats!  You are currently up to date on your membership dues.  Something that many of you may not be aware of is the new policy of ASHRAE to only allow a non-life member's dues to lapse SIX months before dropping them from the organization.  It used to be a twelve month period, but no more!  It is extremely important that you make sure to stay current on your dues for retain all of the benefits an ASHRAE membership can offer.

Have two emails from me sitting in your inbox, not sure how to renew?  Renewing is simple, but renewing online is simple and GREEN! Click Renew Online for a step-by-step guide with screenshots on getting that membership back up and running.  We will have internet access at the meetings, and if you'd like to renew that night, it can be done.  If you are a life member, then all you need to do is Email Me, let me know you are interested in remaining in ASHRAE, and also let me know if you would like to receive your handbooks this year, and that's it.

Equally important is getting fresh and young engineers involved in the society.  As Kevin mentioned above, Lee Huffines is our YEA chair, and John Cole is our Student Activities chair.  Between the three of us, we should be able to answer any questions a young engineer you may know could have.  I cannot stress enough how important ASHRAE is to young engineers.  I myself am relatively young, and have already received many benefits from the group.  Are you a student that just graduated?  Instead of jumping straight into an official membership, we have a Student Transfer plan that allows you to save for the first three years after graduation.

Our first meeting on September 22nd is membership promotion night, so feel free to bring someone interested in ASHRAE!  I will have membership information, as well as any current member would be happy to speak with a guest.  We will also have a laptop available so they could sign up immediately.  If they aren't ready to sign up that night, we just ask that they provide a name and email address so we can contact them at a later date to see if they have any questions.  Oh, did I mention any potential member's meal will be free?  Please let us know if you are planning on bringing a guest so we can prepare with the caterer.

One final note.  Please Email Me if you have any questions about a membership related question, or if you have any suggestions on activities you feel would help promote membership.  I look forward to seeing you all on the 22nd!

Chapter Technology Transfer and Programs

Our September meeting features ASHRAE Distinguished Lecturer Paul Pieper. Mr. Pieper's lecture topic will be "Meeting and Exceeding High Performance Standards, Codes and Guidelines with Air-to-Air Energy Recovery Systems and Equipment."  Mr. Pieper notes that as we move towards net zero energy buildings and a sustainable future for the built environment, many designers struggle with the seemingly conflicting requirements of the latest standards, codes and guidelines when trying to provide high performance HVAC systems that are energy efficient and capable of delivering superior IAQ.  Fortunately, air-to-air energy recovery systems and equipment provide one of the most cost-effective and efficient ways to recycle waste energy while creating quiet and comfortable indoor environments.  An overview of current and proposed standards and guidelines will be presented  to identify areas where energy recovery is mandated and where energy recovery can be employed to meet and exceed performance requirements for efficiency, thermal comfort and ventilation air.

Paul has over 15 years of Sales and Product Management experience in designing high performance HVAC systems and equipment for commercial cooling and industrial applications.  He holds a degree in Pure and Applied Science from Marianopolis College, a Bachelor of Engineering degree from the Department of Building, Civil and Environmental Engineering. Mr Pieper is also a member of the Quebec Order of Professional Engineers and is currently the Marketing Manager for Venmar CES Inc.

Mr. Pieper will also provide an in-depth technical session on the topic of "Dedicated Outdoor Air Systems" from 2pm- 5pm at the Kress Terrace on the same day as the September meeting.
Student Activities
John Cole
Greeting to all.  As the new Student Activities Chair for 2009-2010, I am excited about the role of bringing young aspiring HVAC engineers into the benefits of membership and participation in the ASHRAE and the North Piedmont Chapter. Once again we will be working with the NC A&T students and Dr. Singh, Director of the Center for Energy & Research Technology (CERT). But we will also begin to work with Guilford County Schools to identify the schools interested in what ASHRAE can offer to promote engineering and specific interest in the climate control and refrigeration fields. Moreover, we will also partner with the Young Engineers in ASHRAE (YEA) group on activities since this a natural synergy between the groups because of our work with the youth. Our challenge is to broaden our approach in exposing the younger generations to the great opportunities of working with ASHRAE in the context of their stage of development.  It is so important that we help these young minds as they will be the ones to further the refrigeration and comfort technology we depend on with the added constraint of doing it in a more environmentally responsible way.  Keep this in mind when you are called to help in this important function of the Chapter and the Society as a whole.
Young Engineers in ASHRAE (YEA)

So your a working or soon to be working engineer now.  Has all the studying and tests prepared you for the job you are expected to do?  Well, it partially has.  In real life, every day at work is a test graded by different people with different perspectives and agendas and they may or may not tell you what your grade is.   You will learn from the more experienced mentors you work with from their current perspective or that which they recall when they were younger, but the rapid advances in engineering, communication and management tools may have left many of our elders in the dust.  So who do you turn to?  How about each other?  That is what YEA is all about -- connecting young members of ASHRAE in a forum where they can share experiences and questions in an environment they are more familiar with.

Lee HuffinesThis year, we are lucky enough to have a young engineer transfer to our area from the Triangle Chapter.  He is a recent NC State graduate who has been active in the Triangle YEA group and has enthusiastically volunteered to organize the young members in our chapter.  His name is Lee Huffines. He is the energetic redhead you will certainly encounter at the meetings.  Make sure you introduce yourself and welcome him.
Research Promotion

Reavis  What is Research about?

"The ASHRAE Research Strategic Plan centers on the concept of Sustainability.  The world has finite resources, and so it is essential to effectively utilize those resources to accomplish the mission of ASHRAE.  Sustainability is the concept of maximizing the effectiveness of resource use while minimizing the impact of that use on the environment.  In terms of the thrust of ASHRAE activities, measures that reduce energy use should additionally minimize the negative impacts of carbon and other emissions, ozone depletion, noise, and other detrimental effects.  The Research Plan that resulted from this consideration is based on five broad, far reaching Research Opportunity" (From http://ashrae.org/technology/page/39)

·         Equipment, Components, and Materials
·         Education and Outreach

Each ASHRAE Chapter throughout the world helps raise the funds that provide a better world today and tomorrow. Without each chapter's, sponsor's and individual's financial contributions ASHRAE would not be able to provide such important work.

This year it is our Chapter's goal to raise $27,000 for research and we start out with our three traditional main fundraisers: Fall Golf Outing, 2009 Christmas Party/Auction and a Spring Golf Outing. None of these events could take place without our loyal and great sponsors that  are mentioned on the front cover of this newsletter. We are also blessed to have individual members that contribute as well.

Though economic times are tough we must continue to improve upon our fundraising capabilities which in the long term will provide for a more fruitful future. Please give and participate this year to help reach our goal.

History Notes ... Morgan Jones

"...Cold has been a greater luxury than heat."
An eighth-century caliph, Mahdi of Baghdad, cooled his summer residence when he poured snow (brought from the mountains) between specially built double walls. Others used the heat of evaporation from pools and cisterns to cool rooms.
The Southwestern USA built residences with thick adobe walls. The thick walls served as insulation during the hot time of the day and once warmed they helped make the interior comfortable during the chill of the night.
